This PSL week course explores ethnographic approaches to the study of human societies and cultures at the intersection between anthropology and other cognitive-evolutionary sciences (psychology, biology, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, etc.). The classes will include lectures on several theoretical debates (cooperation, morality, cultural transmission, signaling, ritual, etc.) followed by practical exercises on ethnographic research methods:
participant observation, interviews, natural experiments, interpretation. We will reflect upon the strengths and limitations of anthropological fieldwork in comparison with other empirical approaches as reflected in some key readings. Students will engage in group projects where they will design and conduct a micro-ethnography and will then present their findings in class. ;

Five classes (Monday to Friday) of 4 hours each. In the first two days, we will have lectures and preparations for group projects, the following two days will be dedicated to micro-ethnography while group presentations will take place on the last day of the class.

Each participant will contribute to their group project with data collection and presentation with a clear division of academic labour within the team.
Presentations can be made via poster, slides or multimedia formats and all team members will be involved in the class delivery of findings and interpretation. ;

A good command of English (writing and reading). ;
