This PSL week course explores ethnographic approaches to the study of human societies and cultures at the intersection between anthropology and other cognitive-evolutionary sciences (psychology, biology, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, etc.). The classes will include lectures on several theoretical debates (cooperation, morality, cultural transmission, signaling, ritual, etc.) followed by practical exercises on ethnographic research methods:
participant observation, interviews, natural experiments, interpretation. We will reflect upon the strengths and limitations of anthropological fieldwork in comparison with other empirical approaches as reflected in some key readings. Students will engage in group projects where they will design and conduct a micro-ethnography and will then present their findings in class. ;
